I bought an 09 Road King Police last year with a stock 103, It had 8,000 miles when I got it and has 21,000 now after a couple of rides (ha ha). It's run great even when pushed a tad bit (ha ha again). I've had no problems at all, just did the scheduled service every 5,000 miles and had to get a set of tires. Brakes still have pad life but I'll probably change them out at the 25,000mile service. I haven't made any internal changes (like cams) but did go with a Screamin' Eagle air box/cleaner, bassani 2 into 1 exhaust and had it properly mapped/tuned at the HD dealer.
My question goes out to you that have had a 103 a lot longer than me. How many miles do you have on yours, have there been problems and if so what kind?
IMO the 103 is a tried a true engine. H-D 1st put them in the CVO & Police models which is one of the main reasons I bought my Ultra Limited. I put 16,000 on it this year
The cop bikes take a beating chasing speeders for the few years they are in public service. and keep on running. I figure that is why Harley put them in the CVO line-up.
Are you planning on changing the cam at some point? With the other mods she should really come alive.
I have a 103 with 30,000 on it.Replaced the clutch basket because of a bad ring gear {07 model}.while I was in their replaced the compensator..That is about the only trouble I have had out of it..

+1 I agree 100%!! That's the reason I decided on a 103" build over a 107"... "tried & true". Also agree, cams would really wake your bike up!
When I make decisions sometimes I question myself weather or not it was the right one. I have a 2011 SG with the 103 cruise and abs. Its still stock and I think its damn fast as it stands stock. This is one post I like to read proudly. Lets me know I made the right decision
Wow guys, I thought it already had kick. The only thing I thought was a little strange is top speed. My riding partners have a 03 Road King Classic 88 and a 09 Street Glide 96, both with stage one kits. I can do 108 mph (but get there faster) and they can get up to 106 and 108.
I know different cams do different things. What do I do to get a little more top speed without losing the quickness. Don't get me wrong, I hardly ever go over 80 unless I'm passing in a hurry or maybe a couple of times on a long trip see how fast it will go on a long straight away. I would like to at least go a little over an 88 or 96. Love the quickness though.
Any other engine mods that increase power, speed or longivity besides cams?
