After reading all the reviews and the back and forth regarding Ohlins and Ricor, I just started the ordering process for a set of Ohlins #3-#3 shocks!!
I have been going back and forth for the last two months trying to get as much info regarding both companies and their products. I'm sure that you can understand that it was a tough decision!
Can't wait to get them on!
Anything special I should know about regarding the install? Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
Make sure they are spaced properly. Shock needs to be mounted without any side load on the shocks. Mount one side bottom Shim the top so there is no pushing the top part to the frame.
Other than that, set the preload(sag) where it needs to be and go for a ride, they will tell you if they need an adjustment.
Be patient when tuning them, you aren't going to get that perfect ride after just a few adjustments. If you got them from Howard at MM you are in good hands, He will personally coach you through set up and tuning. Do the basic set up, make some initial adjustments, break ‘em in 500 mi., then start the serious tweaking. You won't realize the full effect of the Ohlins unless you have also done something to improve the front end, like Intiminators or Gold Valve Emulators. In fact, if your front end sucks, like stock, you might not notice a significant improvement with the Ohlins.
The sag settings are ultra important so be thorough and record all your measurements. Also record any damping changes you make so if you need to go back to square 1 you know where that is.
In fact, if your front end sucks, like stock, you might not notice a significant improvement with the Ohlins.
These are my Ohlins #3-3 from Howard. We've done a 2,500 mile tour on them and while the front end does indeed suck, let me assure you improvement in ride quality is remarkable! No more bottoming out when fully loaded, comfort improved so much my wife is truly impressed. Coming from a princess who can tell if there is a pea under a dozen mattresses that is some endorsement.
