I am thinking of upgrading the audio on my 2009 Ultra. I would appreciate any information on what sound changes have worked out for others. Are the Harley Boom speakers good or should I look at aftermarket. What about adding an amp.
I noticed that the HD Boom Ultra Bagger system requires stealer install, does anybody know why this would be needed?

There are some very recent threads discussing J&M, Boom!, & Hawg, completey subjective. Some say get an amp, some say no amp and just replace speakers, etc. You are going to get ALL kinds of varied advice.
I am in the same boat you are in. Do search on the forum first and read some of the other threads. My $.02
:-)
Do your homework, if you are a DIY person there are a lot of options out there. If the HD has to be installed by the dealer, it's probably for warranty purposes.
I went with an ARC amp and 6.5" speakers. Got them from a forum member, Firecap501. Have been very happy with the setup. There is a TON of info on the forum from many people looking to upgrade their audio, and a ton of options. Good luck with your search...
I have tried ARC mini amp and 6.5 inch Hertz speakers with the stock headunit ...great sound. Then I good got a nice deal on a Biketroncs Sony setup, with the ARC amp and Hertz speaker...also great sound. The advantage with the Sony is the USB port on the front of the radio. The USB is very useful when using a thumbdrive or your Ipod it allows you to use your handlebar controls. Do a search on Biketroincs Sony setup.

The amp supplied gets a download from the dealer to provide more bass. I've read of others who have installed the amp w/ bass ports in the tour pak and reported noticeably more bass.
I have installed the Hogtunes Big Ultra kit on my 09 Ultra. Overall I am satisfied with the sound, especially for the price. My system has 8 speakers and the amp. I believe the amp makes a BIG difference. And the whole system is plug and play (no wire splicing or re-wiring) which is a bonus.
If you want plug and play (simplicity), there are many good products out there. J & M, ARC, Biketronics, Hawg-wired just to name a few. Any of the above mentioned are good products. As Glacierpearl stated, you can do as much as your wallet allows on the custom end of things. I'm no mechanic by any means, but the four brands I named above can be installed by any laymen with a couple of hours of hands on time. Haven't read that much about the "Boom" set-up, but if it requires a dealer install that just automatically leaves a bad taste in my mouth, just another way to rape you for 80.00 an hour.
