They usually get there from a Google search and just post not realizing it will show up pages deep in an old topic. This one was quite relevant and a good solution. I approve, maybe I will let him stay on this forum. : )

i have a 2001 flht with higher compression and its hard to start it. yes i do have releases.
i noticed that when my headlight was out last week the bike started much easier. so it would be nice to be able to shut off the headlight to start the bike. any one heard of some company making something. jack.
===================

If you try getting headlight to turn off when starting and it doesnt help then try this.

Since you have compression releases and you bike still starts hard i'd rec pulling the original/stock starter & installing a more powerful hi trq aftermarket stater along with a much more powerful Yuasa GYZ32HL maint free fact act AGM battery with 500CCA avail from Phatperf online for $132 to your door if you live out of the state Phatperf is located in.

Installing that hi power battery and more powerful hi trq starter both at the same time will provide you with max starting power ,but that's just as long as your compression releases and charging system are both in good cond & working properly which may or may not be the case.

I bought that battery and in warmer 70-75 deg temps it showed 625cca's though cca's are supped to be tested when battery is fully charged & at zero / " 0 " deg f temp.

Also, another big help in hot restarts is to install an ultracool oil cooler with elec cooling fans and wards cooling too which together reduced oil temp 50deg f on my bike in summer heat.

Hot restarts in summer heat like post fueling up are improved because the starter/battery & motor aren't as overheated/heat soaked anymore due to oil temp & overall engine temp being significantly reduced with the additional cooling the 2 cooling mods i rec provide.

Wouldnt hurt to chk your main neg & pos battery cables and maybe buy some larger capacity hvy dty battery cabbles from phat perf while your at it too.

Do all the things i stated above & your start issues should be greatly reduced if not gone completely as long as your compression releases are working properly.

Yes it would be pricey to do all i rec but then you would have greatly improved much more reliable starts on your bike for yrs to come which would be money well spent IMHO.

BTW,if doing all the above didnt greatly improve your starting issue then there has be something wrong with your compression releases and or charging system etc reducing starting efficiency in the process.

Happy motoring.

Scott

OH CRAP!

Just read this & realized someone else resurrected this 6 yr old thread i just posted a suggestion on though it's still a viable issue at times here in hdforums.

But this starting issue can esp be a problem on modded bikes with more compression or on bikes with short cam timing / maybe installed a mild aftermarket low rpm hi trq cam with short duration which can increase cyl pressure a bit.

Buddy of mine with a shovel has lights wired separately. Problem is he forgets half the time to flip the switch. We get tired of reminding him and dont want the attention it may bring..from the guys that are authorized to issue reminders.

I'd go with a bigger starter.

I don't like the idea of forgetting to turn it back on.

Wish I could delete my posts, after learning this is an old thread.

Use a spring loaded switch so it automatically returns and headlights aren't forgotten about.

Not that your first contribution to a 7-year-old post in a 17-year old thread isn’t valid and maybe helpful to someone down the road, but I’m curious how you came about this thread for you first post to H-D Forums?
