Start-up problems

Today after riding awhile and stopping to fill up, I tried to start the bike and it made a helluva clunk and then sounded like the starter gear wasn't fully engaged and grinded gears. I tried it again and it turned over slow and started. WTH

It has done this two or three times now.

My 09 will do the same thing. Some will blame a compensator. Some say it's normal. I'm not really sure.

That helluva clunk was the Compensator. Mine was replaced/upgraded to SE under warranty with no charge for upgrade. If you are still in warranty get it taken care of.
