Had an '07 FLHT that did that once in awhile. Took it to the dealer while it was still under warranty and, of course, no problem found. It eventually got worse, took it to a different dealer, couldn't duplicate the problem. Got where it was doing it regularly and took it back in. This time, sitting in a quiet service lane, I tried it and it scared the crap out of the service writer and I saw the techs in the bays look to see what the hell it was. Tore up the srarter drive & clutch housing, all replaced under warranty. I heard many of the '07's had problems with this as many of the starters were junk.
Either one of the following,
Bad Compensator
Bad Starter gear
Bad Ground
Most have installed a screeming eagle compensator and the problem has gone away...My 07 has had all of this done except SE Comp. and just started doing it again....I have a extended warranty so i will not pay the difference to put the SE comp yet... El Cheapo and i don't accept the "It's Normal" Bullshit...I took it back to my dealer until it did the noise one time and my service manager said Holy ****...I am buying another 3 years of warranty as i will keep my bike and it has almost 60000 miles on it, i feel it's good insurance as i have used it for over $2000 worth of repairs.
Yep when I bought my 07 Street Bob it was making a horrible sound sometimes when starting it up.
I had it in the dealer for something else and they came out and told me they found the starter broke off some teeth and they were going to replace it under warranty. They also said they had seen a few just like this with the same problem.
Haven't had a problem since.
Mine went out on my 08, seemed like the battery was low and making all kind of noise then the motor kicked back and luckily it only killed the starter. Going with se compensator as well.
70k miles on my 2000 DWG and 4 starter Overrunning Clutches later Im getting a little annoyed. The 1st starter clutch went out 3,000 miles from home in Canada. Found a dealer up there that had the part in stock, went back to the motel and repaired it in the parking lot. Just barely enough tools in the travel kit to complete the job.
Just finished replacing the fourth clutch using the same POS part (have never found an aftermarket replacement) and found out that most of the starter parts are now obsolete requiring the purchase of a new starter which, by the way, has the same clutch! Too bad Harley will never admit they have thousands of V-Twins out here with poorly designed starters.
Many of the symptoms I read here, grinding etc. are symptomatic of that clutch giving up.
