Have you switched to k&n air filter?
I had to choose other because I went with a Doherty because I wanted a Blue one instead of Red since it is exposed. Reusable and oil-able just like the K&N just a little less costly. I have been using K&N's on everything for years though and if it was not for the color this one would be to.

Mine's exposed now for 2 months and it's not really red anymore. aFe makes blue oil. Have to give it a try
Been using K&N's for years.
Have never had to replace one....just wash it out and reoil once a year.

OK.... I'll be the naysayer......
K&N filters are not that good....
They have two main positives:
1) They flow a lot of air..... yes they do, but most filters will flow more air than the throttle body can handle...
2) They can be cleaned and are reusable.
They also have many negatives:
1) If over oiled, they can foul/affect the MAF in a car or bike or whatever you drive
2) They allow a lot of dirt to pass through,

3) They don't hold as much dirt as some before needing to be cleaned/replaced,

Those charts were taken from a test done to evaluate various filter performance on a diesel truck. They aren't motorcycle filters, but the relationships between the makes/brands will probably be very similar...
Test:http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with K&N, I just believe the majority of their popularity is based on marketing and availability, much more than any measured performance.
I run an SE dry, cleanable filter. If/when it ever becomes unserviceable, I'll probably go to a wire mesh reusable filter...
Just my 2 cents....

Mine is K&N just like post 7 including the skull. The dealer blasted it I think when they did some screwed up warrant work and told me they were throwing in some free service for customer relation.
Anyway, I noticed how in places, you could see light shinning thru more then most and questioned it on here. The K&N dealer saw my post and after reviewing and some pictures shipped me a replacement under their life time warranty. Mine was actually an SE filter but he told me they made them under contract for Harley. The filter was years old. It service like that that makes you take notice.
I'm not too keen on the dry filter. Not sure how you could possible keep oil off it. I wash mine in a little detergent, dry in the sun and dab some oil on it. Always get too much but no big deal for me. I wrap a paper towel around it for a day or so. Love those fancy charts above. Sure they give warm cuddly filling to some.

Many times have seen those tests and question the results. As with any numbers/tests there is some bias, either the testing methode or something.
I have been using them on almost every vehicle I own and some over 30 years and never found much to pass through. To each his own, I will continue to use them
