Have searched and found plenty of info regarding this issue. This new bike is leaving my frustrated in several areas as the 2000 EG I traded was trouble free. First thing that I am not happy with is the suspension but that is for another day. The thing I need to address right away is the detonation going on so I don't destroy the motor on this bike(2011 FLHTK).
The bike pings badly with any load on it and I am running premium fuel. The only mod is Reinhart slip ons for now.
I was hoping the experts could help me in choosing a tuner. The warranty is only one year so I need to make it through this season and stay within factory rules. But I intend to do cams, breather, and head pipes in the future and know I will need a tuner for that.
What I am asking, is there a tuner I can buy now to fix the pinging, not void my warranty, and also use with the further upgrades at a later date? Hope you can help and thanks much for reading
My 07 FLHT STD 96 did the same thing & rode it that way until 16K miles & did BUB 7's & SE A/C & Hd remap no problems. My 2011 FLTRX 103 has no problems with pining. I have 5K miles on it. Also my buddys 07 Ultra has been pining since day one & he now has 30K. Why not just have Hd try a remap? That way you don't void your warranty. Good luck. please let us know how it turns out.
Call Fuel Moto.......... Pick out what you want with the options they give you and go with it.......... Follow their lead with your budget in mind..... They will tell you the best, for the money you want to spend. They will shoot straight....... I have used their products, service, and advice many times and have never been steered wrong......They will tell you what to expect from what you install...... and will be there when and if problems arise down the road............ just my .02.................hdman
Yes, get Fuel Motos PC5, you can quickly and easily disconnet it and your bike go back to the Harley ECM undetected. You can add on Auto Tune latter if you want.
Holy Smokes, you guys are quick with the replies! Looks like the consensus is on Fuel Moto with the PC5. I have sent them an email. But the wife reminded me that the dealer installed the Rinehart slip ons with the guarantee intact including the mufflers. And they assured me that just slip ons would not need a remap. This problem is really become apparent now that the weather is hot. So I think at a minimum a call to the dealer is in order. I really would like to ride this season without dumping more money into the bike. I mean buying it was a huge step in the first place! Thanks for all the replies

Your dealer should give you a free remap if he said slip ons would not be a problem. The
stealer made a bunch on them; did thay keep your take-off mufflers? The ion sensing
knock system should retard the spark but maybe it's not enough. Be sure to only use
HD standard factory plugs ( Champion RA8HC are $1.55 ) to insure the system works
as designed. What dealer are you doing business with? Just asking.
Dealer is Seacoast Harley in Hampton NH. I have my stock mufflers. I have always done my own wrenching but the whole point of letting dealer install slip ons was their offer of NO impact on the warranty and their assurances that slip on didn't require a remap.
