On my 06 when cold upon start up and only for about the first 5 seconds or so.You can hear what sounds like a tappet noise from the right side. Then once oil is pushed through the noise immediately quiets down. Is this something to be concerned about?

Real common with the 2011 models but not so much with the earlier models. You didn't mention how many miles? I don't think it is anything to worry about right now but keep an eye/ear on it and it it seems to be getting louder or lasting longer, a roller may be going bad.

Before you do anything, get a motor stethoscope and locate the noise; might not be a lifter.

 

Heard it on several bikes and does not seem to be an issue but something to keep an eye on. Don't want to start an oil thread but...... what are you running?

As long as it quiets down right away, it's nothing to worry about. If it takes longer and longer to pump up, then you'd want to put in a new lifter. It sounds like a lifter, but wouldn't hurt to make sure that's indeed what it is.

 

I had a lifter bleed down on me afterrunning in real hi temps, the oil broke down from overheating and the lifter would tick until oil psi built up. Than when I changed the oil it stopped for a long time and would only do it occasionally. I replaced the lifters last winter for insurance since it had 30 k on the clock and I do a lot of interstate back roads every year. Oh and I use dino oil!

 

I installed Fueling lifters at 13000 when i did the gear drive cam swap. Now, at 38000 i have an exhaust lifter in front cylinder that bleeds down after oil has been hot and i shut it off for 30 minutes or more. Will eventually pump back up, but takes a while now. Tried straight 60 weight oil but no difference. Thinking of replacing with Woods Directionals as these Fuelings have been noisy from the first day of install. Will the Woods last longer than 25000 miles before needing replaced?

 

How many miles on your bike?
I had two lifters colapse on my '06 at 25000 miles.

 

Both JIMS and Zippers claim service life of 20,000 miles on the lifters they sell. Replaced mine at 45,000 when hydraulic camchain tensioner install was done. The lifter rollers were scored, could have reused them if necessary but replaced the cams and lifters to do the job right. Always run synthetic oil in this stock 88.

 

Probabl; they are a very high quality piece of hardware and, like anything Mr. Woods sells, a bit on the pricey side. Put the question about service life to Mr. Woods. I doubt if anyone running them has had time to run up 25K miles as they have only been around a couple of years.
