My cruise set when I first set out today, but later just decided not to work anymore. While filling up with gas, I turned the ignition on and tapped my brakes. The brake light was went on as expected but did not shut off. When I got home I turned off the bike. When I turned the ignition back on the light was normal. Then I'd tap the brakes (front or rear) and the brake light would come on and stay on until I turned the ignition switch back off. I repeated this several times.
Your rear brake switch has probably failed or is about to fail. The symptom of losing cruise control and the brake light at the same time indicate the brake switch has failed. If it happens again, disconnect one of the terminals on the rear brake switch and see if the brake light works with the front brake lever and that the cruise control works.

+1. My rear brake light switch has failed twice. On the occasion it failed causing the light to be on all the time, I couldn't use my cruise control. Some circuit is thinking your brake is applied and the cruise won't work.
Did you recently change grips or move the c clamp on the bars on the throttle side recently?
Nope. Was cruising along set at about 70. Hit some traffic so I slowed down. Traffic cleared up and I went to resume but nothing happened. I haven't changed grips, brake levers or any other type of mods.
I'm thinking it is a switch but dunno. The bike is still under warranty so I'll be calling for an appointment tomorrow morning.
I went to Patriot HD in Fairfax and told them the issue I was having with the brake light. I also told them I'd be waiting for the bike.
The service dept gave me enough time to look at all the models on the showroom floor and although it was tempting I resisted trading in my RK on a really sweet FLHX.
Anyway, the service dept said there were many error codes that indicated the front brake switch needed to be replaced. They replaced the switch, cleared the codes and covered it under warranty. All is right with the world... or at least my RK.
Again, thanks to this forum and forum members for all you do.
same exact thing just happened to my 09 Electra Glide. Rear brakes kept going out, refilled fluid, bled brakes anmd it lasted about 2 hours and went out again. When i got home the switch was smoking and leaking fluid. This needs to be a recall!!!
