Default Front suspension upgrades

First thing in the spring I'm having the 50k mi fork service done. I planned on doing an upgrade while it was apart. Basically 3 choices, new progressive springs ($100 or less), Progressive twin cartridge system ($399), or HD Monotube ($399 - whatever discount I can muster). Honestly, I'm not sure how to go here...not sure if the progressive springs will make enough difference over stock, but it's a big jump in $$ to go to the others. Even then, not sure which of the cartridge setups are better. In any case, absolutely ne desire to lower anything.

I'm on an '09 UC, I'm 6'2" and about 240 if that matters.

Looking from some input from those of you that have made changes.

I went with the Race Tech setup which included the gold emulators and springs. I made sure that the stock ride height was maintained. I was very pleased with the result. Much better control with better suspension compliance.

Simple cheap suggestion. Drain the fork oil yourself and replace with the screaming eagle fork oil. There are threads here with directions to do it yourself. The screaming eagle fork oil will stiffen it up a little and give it a better feel. Less mushy. It doesn't cost much and you can always go the other route later if your not happy with it. I did it on my night train and was very happy with the results. It actually raised the bike slightly.

You have an 09 and are bothered about spending a few dollars?! All those options are inexpensive. Further possibilities are cartridges from Traxxion and, in time, Ohlins from Motorcycle Metal, which are under development.

You will get what you pay for and low dollars = low expectations! I have Emulators and RaceTech springs in my SuperLow and am not ecstatic about them. They are a slight improvement but not worth the money IMHO.

I had the Progressive springs with SE oil, it was an improvement, but not alot. A couple months ago I went to the 13" Premium Ride shocks and the Premium Ride cartridge forks (you have the Progressive & HD systems mixed up). The shocks are better than the stock air shocks, but I wouldn't recommend them for persons less than 200 lbs. w/o a tour pak and 180 lbs. with a tour pak because they are somewhat stiff. The forks work great. I highly recommend them and there was a post sometime back that the poster said that he thought they were as good as a Traxxion system he had on a previous bike. It does take some special tools for install. This is where I bought mine online, they were about 20% off with free shipping. www.surdyke.com

Im getting ready to do my forks as well.

The first week I had the bike I changed to SE Fork oil, Ive done this on all my HDs and its is an improvement IMO. They are not so mushy with a heaver oil in them.

Based on Forum feed back (HDF, RG Forums, V Twin ) the Progressive Monotubes get good reviews. Ive also used Progressive springs and shocks on my bikes in the past and had good results. So Im going to give the Monotube a try. They are available from US Motoman or Phat Performance for about $ 280.00 and dont require any special tools to install like the HD product does.
