Default how to remove rear caliper on 2010 Street Glide

i got my new tires in and was taking the wheels off so i could take them to my indy to have new skins put on, and i have hit a small, i hope, brick wall. i cannot get the caliper to clear the disc on the rear wheel/tire assembly. i have almost taken the axle all the way out, but have left enough of it in to support the wheel. the Book said to take it out prior to removing the axle, tried that but would clear the disc so out came the axle. i don't know what i'm doing wrong. any ideas where i'm messing up. the caliper will almost clear, but then hits the wheel and tire. HELP!!!

Twist the caliper on the disc with both hands to retract the pistons, it will give enough room to remove the caliper

I use plastic paint scrapers, one each side of the disc.
they are enough of a wedge to push the pads/pistons back into the caliper.

is important not to use metal ( like a screwdriver, chisel) as that'll marr the pads
