Default RE: close call

The problem with motorcycle riders of today is they will
quit riding at the drop of a hat.

Those same riders will go out in their car and have a bad wreck,
their whole family could be killed in that wreck but as soon as
they can they will be back in that car without giving a second
thought to the fact they could be killed the very next day..

There is no logic to how the 21st century rider thinks, they will
quit riding because their buddy got killed on his motorcycle, but
yet 10 of their close family can be killed in a car and they jump
in their car without eventhe slightest worry in the world it will
happen to them..

Go figure!!

Different strokes for differentfolks I guess...

Joe,

I've been in accidents and I've had close calls. I have a plate and screws on my right arm, rebuilt right knee, chest tube scar, the whole nine yards. The long and short of it is just like Stafford and others have said.

It's all up to you. You'll decide what is right for you.

For me, I can't live happily without riding. I've been riding some form of two wheeled vehicle since I was 8 years old and I'll keep riding until I'm physically unable. My most recent close call actually came during Biketoberfest 2005. I rode my brand new Street Glide (picked up mid-September) down from Virginia and was on the 415 going from Deltona to Daytona Beach. This truck in front of me and my Brother-In-Law, hauling a load of trash in a trailer, had a Steel Hazmat Locker on top tied down with some THIN A$$ rope. The rope broke and I watched in slow motion (it seemed after the fact) as the locker came right at me. Fortunately I was able to dodge in time, but it did hit my brand freakin' new engine guard on the right corner just barely missing my leg. My Bro-In-Law and I pulled off to the side of the road, shook the adrenaline out of our system, made the driver of the truck feel like a lawsuit was coming, and then rode on to Daytona. I left the scuff and paint on the engine guard as a reminder that stuff can happen at any time, in any place, to anyone.

Edited because my spelling has lapses...

Default RE: close call

There are many day's that I chose not to ride to work (gut instinct).

Back in 19hundrend and 89, I was hit by a Seaboard Sanitation truck (5ton) in St.Augustine. I hit the truck cause he gunned it thru a stop sign and into the 4 lane highway, I had one second to respond to a 55 mph impact. As you know when you are doin close to 55mph or more, there is no way to drop the bike or anything cause of the gyro effect. I layed on the brakes and went straight, so I picked an area on the truck that would least hurt me. I knew the rear of the truck would have cut me in half and probably would have run over me too. So I let off the brakes and veered to the cab area. I impacted the cab and front tire at an approximated 45mph. I popped his front tire broke his steering linkange and rolled his front fender all the way in a couple feet. It's truley amazing how much thought process goes into a wreck as it occurs. I was injured but not badley, I rolled back out of the fender area and it crossed my mind about oncoming cars. I looked behind my wreck site and two cars were already sitting sideways and thier eyes were bugged out like they just seen a ghost.
So anyhow I get a 20k settlement from Seaboard offered within hours on the phone. All my freinds started calling and said wait for more and get an attorney. So I hired the one in the bike mags and a doctor, big mistake, they got all the money and I got around 3k.
I take the 3k and add a little to it and buy an Electrglide. Guess what happens, I am riding to work on a mistley morning, a semi puts on the brakes with no blinkers cause he missed his turn, I look in the rear view and a little fat redneck in a Silverado is spinning in cirlces totaly out of control and heading for ME. I took off around the truck in the grass along the side of the hwy and keep going. I sold that bike 2 days later.
I gave it up and got into rock crawling and boating. But I tell ya, theres nothing like cruisin on your bike. I missed it for 15 years. This year I bought two bikes, and I feel more educated about the whole thing now and a little more at ease about riding.
I love riding and I figure if I get hit, then I feel comfortable with it cause of my age and having everything ready for my wife and kids. Plus I told her to make SURE she will siut for millions and no less. We riders are more ina highly dangerous sport and hobby, but I would rather die then sit in the front of the TV and get old.
Good luck Bro and dont let the idoit cagers get ya down.

Joe, I think all of us that have riden long have had close calls that scare the s**t out of us. I think the day the doctor spanked your *** for the first time in your life you were given so many days here on earth and how you spend them is your call. You didn't hit that car because it wasn't your day, when your day comes I hope your enjoying It and doing what you love. But listen to your gut it won't lie to you. Good Luck and be safe. Tom
