I hate having to pay the dealer to tell me they can't find anything wrong or they can't reproduce a particular condition. But, if that's what I got to do, then I guess that's what I'll do, AGAIN.
I had a Stage 1 done at the dealer when my '09 Ultra Classic only had 500 miles on it. It now has 19,000 miles and I question if there needs to be something else done every time I get a really funky attempted start where it either doesn't start the first time or I get a big gush of fuel vapor out of the intake and what sounds like a mini-backfire. This condition doesn't happen with any regularity. It may start 50 times perfectly every time and this happens. I use the same 92 octane and brand fuel 90% of the time. It happen most often when it has been riding for several miles. The same thing has happened on a rare occasion on a cold start but not often.
Does anyone have a suggestion what may be causing this and what needs to be done to fix it?
My 06 Ultra does the same. Once in every 50 starts or so as well. I was concerned at first but just figured that it was either the spot of rotation where the engine stopped at, OR I wasn't holding in the starter button long enough to have the engine to fire correctly. With this bike having the motor built to a 10.5 to 1 compression with CR's, I figured again it was just inherent to the build. More folks will chime in I am sure. But I wouldn't worry about it.
Mine would act up once in a blue moon. Long story short.
I had a SE Comp installed, new Clutch plate, and upgraded to a chrome starter. Nothing really showed ware other then the starter pin (if that's what it's called, forgot). But everything is fine and dandy. I had the ESP and only paid like $50 deductable and price difference for the chrome starter.
This happen on my scoot right around 17k on the clock.
Mine does it also once in a great while, hold the starter button longer....it happens that you let off the button and it isnt all the way through that stroke... I dont think there is anything to be concerned about. If it did it everytime then I would be worried.

Good Luck and Ride Safe,
YELLOWBIRD
I also have a fairly new SE compensator and chrome 4.3kw starter. The engine seems to start a lot smoother with the new compensator but it didn't change the starting characteristics.

I'm glad I'm not the only one this happen to. There's no reason to take it to the dealer then.
Thanks for the input guys.
