Default I don't get it.......

I have an '02 EG Classic and the best I can get is about 32/33mpg. I've had my mechanic go through the carb and it's up to snuff. I've replaced the plugs and wires (from HD) and my mileage stills sucks!!! I don't get it....... It is a stock system with stock oval pipes. I don't gun it, I drive it. On the Interstate I ride 75-80....... I read of others who get into the 40's for their mpg and I don't get what is happening. Any suggestions or offerings of info is greatly appreciated.

You have a 5 speed trans , running 75-80 will suck fuel like there is no tomorrow, try riding at no more than 65 and see what it does.

That's what I'm resorting to do. I guess it's jealousy in reading how others cruise at 80 and still get 40's.......

It is going to be impossible for any of us to diagnose it because we have not seen it or worked on it. Perhaps the most important thing that you left out of the equation was "What did your mechanic tell you about only getting 32 mpg??I would think he would be the one to put the question to.

If the weather is still cold where you ride, it really effects mileage especially if you're taking short rides between tanks over a week or so.

He77, I've seen 49mpg and I've seen mid 35's.
I'm sure it doesn't happen to you, but the friendlier I am with the throttle, millage has never been on the high side.
I've done it, but it's no fun riding like a geezer. I don't recommend it!
And If you aren't living on the edge, your in one of life's cheap seats, RIGHT! (-;

Yeah I'd say if you're trying to max your MPG's to keep the speeds at 65-70 mph and keep a steady hand - no up and down on the speeds - nice n smooth/steady.

On your start-ups take them smooth and easy, running up through the gears gently and that should give you maximum mileage.

You're at the low end of normal for these bikes. They usually are in the upper 30's and low 40's. Some individual bikes will run in the upper 40's. Riding style has alot to do with it of course. You're not running too rich? I assume you've checked all those things?
