pinging
went on a ride yesterday & noticed pinging. i always run super & have a stg1 down load. just makes me want to get it to the dyno guy even more now.
got my SERT couple weeks ago but just need to recover from that to do dyno. amazing what you hear when you turn down your radio
.
should be able to get it done with in a couple of weeks now.

if it is persistent- get it fixed.
prolonged pinging will burn a hole in the piston ( really), or burn the heads.
in an effort to control pinging the ECM will retard timing which will affect performance and MPG
1.) try another brand of gas
2.) downshift- the dynamics of a motor are vastly different at 4000 rpm than 2500 rpms
I use xieds, they took care of a persistent ping under certain repeatable conditions when the bike was completely stock ( 2800~3200 rpms up a 6% grade).
From there I was able to complete stage 1 to good result.
xieds= $130 +/-

that would be great if i didnt already have the money invested in the SERT.
i did use lower gears when i would hear it & i like the higher RPMs anyways.
didnt ping a lot but its there & i need to take care of it.
always run CHEVRON super & if i have to run some other brand i will run the tank out till the fuel like comes on then fill up with CHEVRON again. UNLESS......when they filled the tank at the gas station they didnt put super in there & it was regular. made it all day yesterday on same tank, think ill run this tank completely out & refill at another CHEVRON.
oh ya & this was in the mountains lots of rollings hills but nothing major bout 80-85* out.

rather than run out the tank, add "known" fresh gas asap.
IF you gotta bad tank, the new stuff will dilute it.
and let's hope that is the solution.
( I got a bad tank once in Blythe, CA at a Chevron...last gas for 110 miles and I had a summit to get over.
rather than risk the bike, I retarded the timing ( Hi4E used switches), I went back to town, drained the gas out ( gave it to a kid to put in his pick up) and filled up again at the Shell- trip resumed).
the xieds and the sert will work with each other if that is your concern.*
steve at nightrider is a way smart guy, his website was up, running and giving free tech advice long before he developed and packaged anything for sale.

* the xieds are simply a resistor pack that plugs inline with the o2 sensors- the o2 sensors return slightly reduced voltage to the ECM, causing the mixture to be slightly richer- just slightly.
on my 09 my mpg dropped for 44 to 43 mpg with the xieds, so we could guess that 3% more fuel is added, just enough to compensate for the increased air flow of the stage 1

ps regarding "octane boost", if it is in a plastic bottle, it is not worth using, the "real" stuff is in metal containers and would eat plastic in high concentrations.
look at your fuel first, it seems to be the variable here and is the least expensive avenue of investigation

Did you get the software and cables? If so you can upload a base map that is way better then the stage1 download. And if it is a SEPST you can do smart tunes to get it even closer.

figured i would of got the DYNO tune by now when i purchased it but i had some unexpected costs for the wifes truck that pushed back the DYNO a couple weeks.
i am going to get the kit though.
