Default converter question

I keep reading about everybody removing the converters on the newer bikes, isn't this illegal? I know if i took my converter off my car and took it in for inspection it would fail, is this different for bikes? I don't have a new bike, yet, have my old 99 EG standard but just wanted to know for future reference, also if they do make it mandatory what are all the guys going to do that took them off? Another thing, are there really that many problems with the newer bikes, more then one mechanic told me he would not own a HD newer then around 2006, should I keep my 99 and rebuild and upgrade when the time comes, she has 40k miles and only had the tensioners replaced and still running great, just curious, thanks.

yes, it is illegal to remove any emissions controls, including the catalytic converter. however, there are very few (if any) states that inspect bikes on the same level as cars. i think most folks are sticking their stock exhaust systems in the attic for future reference and replacing it with an aftermarket system. some folks don't plan on keeping their bikes that long, while others will just deal with it if or when the time comes. i removed the cat from a stock exhaust header. but i bought a used one to do that with and stored my original.

every year has it's own quirks and nuances. buy what you like, whats in your price range, and research to see what 'additional' maintenance requirements you'll have.

Went to Harley dealer and noticed all their bikes, both new and used, were equipped with stock slip on's. They said they were put on notice by Calif. that they were no longer permitted to put on non CARB systems.

Think in 2014 owners will also not be able to legally modify their exhaust systems.

The days of robust sounding Harleys are numbered.

Just got back from a trip to Europe, and noticed most of the street bikes were equipped with stock exhausts. Believe they have tightened restrictions over there too.
