Good luck, mine was on with dbl sided tape, but felt like it'd been welded on. Wasn't concerned with salvaging it so I finally pried it off. You might want to try a heat gun and a lot of patience!
The flame thing will fit on over the insert--no need to remove it.

If you like the slightly closer tolerance without it, pick up a used fottball at a swap meet, or see if your dealer has one in the take-off pile. They practically GIVE 'em away.
