Question Stage 1 flash?

Is a stage 1 flash at the Harley Stealership good enough or should I go the tuner route? I have stock header pipes with Vance and Hines Twin Slash Ovals slip-ons and Screaming Eagle Stage 1 Air Kit on my 2008 Electra Glide Ultra Classic.

Thanks

some of us use nightrider.com XIEDS.

about $100 in the US

I have had good results.

some use the H-D flash, some a tuner. some have good results with stage 1 and no tuner.

It is somewhat a case by case

To my knowledge while the stage 1 flash will change some settings and kick up the rev limiter, it will do very little if anything for your AFR as they are bound by EPA limitations. If you want to do something about your lean condition, you will need some kind of tuner, or the XIEDS as someone suggested.

Since you already have the stage 1 hardware you definitely need something. The dealer download is minimal, a lot of us went with a tuner, xied's etc., if you do that don't bother spending the $$ on the download. The tuners will take care of everything the download does and more.

I highly recommend you go the tuner option. I did the dealer ECM then decided to make additional changes later and had to go the ECM route. So I ended up paying for both.

The aftermarket ECMs are not restricted to the EPA and provide more options.

I'd stay away from the stage 1 flash myself...and get a tuner !

I've had the Stage 1 flash on both my Sportster and Streetglide.
The SG has V&H True Duals with Monster Ovals slip-ons and a Heavy Breather intake.
The Sportster had V&H Shortshots and a Heavy Breather intake.
Both run great with no issues.

I agree. I have ran the download on my bike for 3 years. Ran great. Not many on the forums will admit that it is good enough. They are right about it not adding enough fuel to cool the engine down. I have since put a tuner on because I found a good deal on it. It is just a fuelpak so it doesn't leave much for future engine upgrades but I don't really plan for that. It does seem to have a little more pep with the tuner.

I would get the XEID's at nightrider.com before even thinking about the harley download. It all depends on how good you want your bike to run....

around 100 bucks will get it running better then stock

400 bucks for a tuner and another 300 bucks for the dyno will get it to run the best it can...It's not just a power thing...it will run cooler and even cruise better and when you need to twist it....wow!

I bought the XEID's first....waited until I was done with my engine mods...then bought the TTS tuner and had it dyno'ld by a well known tuner. If you decide to go that route...make sure you find a guy that really knows how to tune or it could be a waste of money.

The flash is perfect when matched with SE pipes and intake, and no further engine mods are planned. The setup is well engineered to work perfectly together. Did it on 2 Road Kings, and my Electra Glide, with zero issues, and no dyno time required. The SE tuner would be a good choice if you plan to do additional mods down the road.
