There are some scammers on CL for sure but after a while you get a feel for them by their grammer, as well as their questions and proposals.
Perhaps it's the way I word my ads but I make it clear that I'm not wasting my time with low-ball offers and that I won't deal with anyone who is currently on a ship somewhere and cannot commnicate directly with me.
I've successfully sold some items on CL this year but you have to be careful.
Perhaps my experiences are not common but the folks that have came to buy my "stuff" have been nice folks who are exactly what they claimed to be.

In fraud circles it's known as "West African Advance Fee Fraud". The cheque etc will be a dud and after you send on the goods the cheque will bounce. Quite common on this side of the pond.

your asking price and I can make your payment either by check or money
order because I am currently away on a business trip. I will make the
arrangement for pick-up AFTER you have received the payment. I don't
mind adding a little extra ($30 or so) for any inconvenience this may
cause you. You should receive your payment within 4-6 business days.
The only information I need from you is your full name, cell phone
number, and your address where you'd like me to send your money!
Also,i will appreciate if you can get the ad off craigslist so i can
be sure you are keeping it in my favor .Awaiting your reply. Thank you
