Default Inner fairing question

On my 1998 Electra Glide the lower inner fairing at the top of it rubs the chrome gas tank bezel. This is true only when the handle bars are pointed straight ahead as it is just the top curved part of the inner fairing that touches the chrome gas tank bezel/housing.

Annoying because it causes a chirp when riding and when hitting bumps. I have been tempted to crank the bars to the left or right and grinding away a bit of the plastic to allow clearance when the bars are pointed straight but hesitate as I am sure this is not how this bike came from HD.

Anyone have an idea as to what is going on? I have checked, the bike has not been in any wrecks and the forks seem tight.

Sounds to me like the fairing isn't mounted properly, should not be touching at all.

I agree, should not be touching anything. See if you can move the fairing assembly forward any. If you can, you need to pull the outer fairing off & check all the mounting points. Could be loose or something is broken. Your bike is 15 yrs old now and the signs of wear & tear eventually show up.
