Lol. There's a great write up on here. It was a piece of cake as long as the primary cover comes off smooth. Good luck.

it's a breeze if you have any mechanical skills...just take your time, have a laptop with the post of instructions on https://www.hdforums.com/forum/tourin...it-w-pics.html, and you just saved yourself some cash. have a manual handy too for torque specs and such. some guys say they had to shave their cases, but I didn't...it's all about finese and careful movement. Good Luck!

Most compensator issues are with the redesigned 96in and 103s compensators. Your '99 may just need to be checked and tightened.

You have a '99 like me. I've never heard of the older models going out.

Mine came loose last summer and was making a racket. Just take the primary cover off and torque the compensator nut per HD manual specs. High torque number so I had to borrow a wrench, and they recommend a tool (wedge type item) to stop the chain from spinning when tightening. But I did mine with out the special tool with help from a friend who sat on the bike and pressed the rear brake. It worked also and I got it torqued. Thousands of miles since with no return of the noise. Good luck.

this doesn't apply to our older bikes.
