If you're talking about the side covers on a touring bike, the studs on the side covers pop into a rubber gromet, at least mine do. You can get them at a HD dealer.

Yep, thought I lost mine, bought from dealer and found original a couple months later detailing the bike. Forget where it got lodged so you might check your bike good.
As i mentioned, they do not show in the hd dealers computer as a seperate item from the side cover.
If someone knows that part number,i would love to have it,
thanks

Your not following. There is NO screw in metal stud
What holds the side cover into the bikes?
There are(were) 3 plugs that screw into the side covers using a torx.
They would be permanent if they didn't vibrate out of the side cover.
The rubber grommets can start getting hard after 15 years. I know your bike is not 15 yet but I would go ahead and change them out. They are cheep cheep compared to the price of side covers. Losing one on the highway is no fun.
