I just investigated a small leak on mine and found the oil filter loose. First time this has ever happened to me. Can't blame anyone but myself, dammit.

The funny thing about leaks is they can be in the front of the motor ,but cove the entire bottom of the motor. Among other things, make sure the oil filter is tight. There are o-rings on the filter mount that could be leaking. The stator plug or even the oil pressure switch can look like its coming from the bottom side of the motor. Get it all cleaned up then search it out.,

If it's not an Oring, than shifter seal is a very common leak on the 88's. Easy to tell, slide a hand mirror under the left side of the engine torward the back below the shifter rod. You will see fresh oil around the shaft area if it is a shifter seal. Easy fix, but it's about a $300 give or take because the primary has to be removed to get to the shifter rod.

Default Easy fix

6 of the bolts holding the cap encasing the transmission had slowly vibrated back and were able to be removed with the mechanics fingers! It happens on the six speeds but not so much on the five speeds.

That said, they backed the bolts out, replaced a small seal (they didnt really need to but did since they took the area a part slight to investigate), tightened all the bolts and that was that. It was a very easy fixed....

So the road kind was ok after all. They suggested i check the bolts with an allen wrench in a month to be sure theyre tight and holding. They said I should have a problem.

They were nice, and helpful, got me in right away and i waited and hour...

the damage $55

thanks for the advice and suggestions... all were helpful for the future.

Same with me last season...I would check to make sure the oil filter isn't loose.

I want to take it in to have them look at it and whether I keep the bike or sell it, I will have to cover the cost of the repair either way. Im selling to a friend so I dont want anything wrong with it.

any suggestions concerns advice would be very helpful as to what it could be. The bike had a 30k service last summer. It now has 37K on it. are there things that begin to wear around this time, gaskets, seals, etc? Im not much of a mechanic when it comes to bike repair so any advice would be helpful. The Harley service is about a 20 mile ride from me - will the bike be ok riding that far in the am?
Thanks guys.
It is likely the 6 bolts holding the transmission are loose. Your mechanic will likely find them only finger tight. He should put some sealer on the bolts and retighten. Repair should be about $50.00.
