pistons + bore = $500+, cams + lifters + pushrods = $500+, headwork w/ARC = $800+. Good luck putting it all together for $2000. Nothing wrong with FM kit but they aren't the only game in town. Just decide on a goal and call a few places. Don't give up quality for price.
Both Hillside and Fuel Moto are HDF sponsors. I'm sure they will both give you details and prices for their conversions, however phone or email them direct. Call in the Tech Engine section, where there is plenty of discussion about such things, also other contributors who do such mods. You could also simply use 'Search' for each of those names.
I have used Vee Twin Perf in the past and Fuel Moto now. Both are great and do an excellent job.
Vee Twin Perf used to be in Bloomington, IN. I lived in the next town from them so it was very convenient to use them. I now live in WI and about 60 minutes from Fuel Moto. I like to have support local if I need it. You might also consider Dragos if you are in IL.
Vee Twin Perf. is a good machine shop and engine building shop. They do all their own machining in house for their engines and components. I believe Vee Twin will also build pretty much anything you want. The owner of Vee Twin, Kirby, is an old school drag racer. A very cool guy to talk with, if you get the chance.
Fuel Moto is an EFI tuning shop (that is their core business) that has some very well put together engine kits. Jamie Long and his crew are a very smart group of guys that have worked with some of the best folks in the industry (ie Bob Wood) to make some great engine kits that work well. As you also know, Fuel Moto has developed their own line of exhaust components.
Again, both are great shops with lots of experience and can provide you with a good engine kit. I'd suggest you call them both and talk with them. Go with the shop you like best. There is no wrong answer here. You may think through what you want to do with your engine build and match that with the shops specialties listed above.
I have done searches and made calls, but maybe i'm leaving a builder out that I don't know about.
Don't look too hard, that only adds to the difficulty of deciding! The names mentioned can all supply everything you will need, the only alternative I suggest is seeing if you have someone close to home, who you can visit and meet face-to-face.
