Been riding since the late 60's. I just became the proud owner of a 2013
FLHTCU Ultra Classic. Already adding to it...I want to change the exhaust
with slip-ons and minimal cost. Looking into Vance & Hines or Freedom
4" Slip-ons. Just don't wanna have to got full bore with fuel work and air
cleaner and Dyno work. Not a performance nut, just want a little more noise.
I can do the bolt and nut stuff myself. Just want peace of mind on the
slip-ons and the bike. Any suggestions.
Well I can tell you from experience because I bought the same bike over fall. Slip ons alone won't make much difference in sound. I had save the slip ons off my 98 ultra classic which sounded great. Put them on the new bike and was very disappointed. Not any louder than stock. The problem is the cat. So as long as you got that in there I'm not to sure anything will give you much of a volume difference. So I went true duals and the air cleaner and tuner and couldn't be happier.
A friend of mine has a 2012 SG. He bought it new and had the slip ons put on before he ever turned the key on it. He hated the sound of the bike with only the slip ons so we pulled them off ripped out the cat and put them back on. It now sounds like a Harley should. As long as you don't change the head pipes no ECU upgrade should be needed. Hope this helps.
Agreed. I just changed the headpipe to Jackpot 2/1/2 and kept the stock mufflers. Has a nice louder rumble than stock and barks when you get on it. You can probably achieve similar results decatting your own headpipe or buying one already done for about $100. No need for a tuner or anything else unless you do the A/C.
If you just remove the Cat, and add slip ons, NO air filter change, you'll be ok.
If you change both exhaust and air cleaner then you'll have to add a tuner.
I have a 2013 UC and I'm removing the cat and running my SE slip ons.

Skeeter49.. let me know before you buy pipes sir. I have a set of freedom performance classic slipons slash up (follow contour of bags) 4" that I put on back at the end of October. Doing performance work now so changing up the pipes to match the motor work so I'll be taking these off in the next week or so. Will make you a good deal on them. GREAT sounding pipes, the quality is awesome, and they look great as well.

**EDIT**
Hell I just noticed you're in Houston. You're more than welcome to come by and see/hear them before I pull them off this week too.

Smartest and cheapest thing you could do is remove the cat.You already have less restrictive mufflers because of the cat in the head pipe.If you gut it yourself you'll get more sound and less heat for next to nothing. Then if you still want more and you add slip-ons it'll sound good and you still won't need a tuner.
