Go as new as you can.
With the '10's and above, to eliminate the excessive heat you'll need to eliminate the catalytic converter and perhaps a new exhaust system, and a good dyno tune, and even with this you will still feel heat.
The newer ('09 and up) touring bikes have larger rear tires which basically doubles the mileage of the narrower tires, but they also cost more.
