Default FLHRC windshield question

New bike (3 days old now) and I was adding some goodies to it yesterday. I took the shield off to install the tri-pouch. When I put it back on, I'm not too crazy about the quick release. The spring clips don't secure to anything. With the shield seated in the mounts, I can push the shield forward andit will come loose from the top gromets fairly easy. The spring clips don't latch to anything that I can tell. Someone clue me in please. [&o]

this is 'normal' for a RK windshield. You can bend the spring clip downward to allow it to grab the mounting point a bit more. The force of the wind while riding is supposed to hold the shield in place. When i had my RK, i was very '****' about that at first, but never had an issue with the shield wanting to fall off or anything. Bending the springs, does seem to give it more grab action, at least it is a bit harder to remove from the mounts. I would ride and not worry about it.

I have heard a rumor that while sitting at an intersection waiting to turn left a guy on a RKC had his windshield blown off when a semi overtook him. I don't know how much truth their is in the story but it does make me nervous when I am sitting waiting on a green arrow.

I don't believe it, unless the windshield was improperly installed or the rubber grommets worn way past worn out.

Last year, about a month after I bought my new Road King, I had my windshield blow off at a light. The wind was blowing from my back at about 30MPH.. I had never taken my windshield off. I bent the clips the way Harley should of bent them and haven’t had any more trouble. You have to reshape the clip not just bend them down. Here is a pic to show you. George

Did the same to mine right from the get go.... Just makes me feel better about the hole set up. There are a lot of things on a guys Harley he can improve on over what the factory does.

Good idea, take care,

I've never had a problem, but did reshape the retainer clips, though not as drastically as a-man. WHen I rented a RKC while visiting my son, the stealer had a bungee looped clip-to-clip and under the frame neck. I did that too, when I got home.

of all the miles ive ridden on road kings (work and personal), ive never heard of or had a windshield 'blow off'

i can say that on the older FLH's (like, 1987ish) the windshields are bolted on. if you ask me- thats not very safe in the event of a crash. id like my shield to 'break away' rather than me going through it.
