Default Temp

Just wondering, has anyone added an engin temp gauge?? High temps make me a bit nervous riding through town. Stop and gos. Although feeling the heat on my legs doesn't bother me, I don't want to melt my engine down..

Brace yourself for a bunch of "stop worrying" comments. The engine wont melt down, but there are a lot of options for temp monitoring gauges if that's something you want.

Default Merlins head temp gauge

I purchased a cylinder head temp gauge and refer to it after the eng warms up and also if working the trike a bit. Gives me peace3 of mind in 98 deg weather and my right leg is sweating. I forgot the price and it does what a wanted. Did not put any thermal past under the sender but it works fine. My gauge will usually read 220 deg.unless the engine is working hard. I wired through a switch hot from the battery to make sure Harley doesn't void any warranty for electrical mods.

If you get an oil temp gauge you'll worry about it even more. Ride the bike.

Yup! The entire World vehicle industry spends a fortune developing and testing every new vehicle, to prove that it can operate in the worst imaginable desert and arctic conditions, way outside the comfort zone of most mortals. Ride on and enjoy!

This ties in with the EITMS thread...

Ride it.

It's a machine, YOU feel the heat more than it does.

I live in South Texas... San Antonio traffic is stop and go for quite a ways, and it's been well over 100° here for a couple months. I don't worry....

I was stuck in traffic labor day traffic on I15 west coming out of Vegas. Air temp said 115 degrees and traffic wasn't moving. Bike got HOT but never had an issue.

I'm surprised no one pulled this one out yet:

I keep my PV mounted on my bars and usually have the display set to throttle position, IAT, and ET. First few months of watching it, I was paranoid that I was gonna melt my engine into a smoldering lump of silvery lava...but then I remembered all the posts I read on here about torture tests, etc. and realized that yeah, these things run hot, and NO, they're not gonna self destruct in normal riding.

I'd keep a mental tally of how often you're riding in way hot, stop and go conditions and maybe change your fluids more often if that makes you feel better...

I agree - just ride it.

I'm a newbie living in N. Arizona and riding my first HD. When I moved here I was still riding a air cooled metric v-twin and could feel the heat only somewhat. That bike had a section of aluminum heat shield hidden under the rear of the gas tank. Would this mod help reduce the heat with a HD?
