Default Since day one it has leaked oil.

My dad bought a vrod 2 years ago and since we picked it up it leaks oil. nothing to major if it sits over night about a nickle sized spot. We have gone over everything and cant seem to figure it out. One of his friends just said that HDs do that, any truth to that?

V-rods don't leak. Where is the area of the leak? The early models had a problem at the stator grommet on the left side

I have an 04 Ultra with 34k on it. It doesn't leak. No, HDs don't just do that. Now I'll shut up and let someone who knows what the deal is wade in on the discussion.

Yeah, Dad should have taken it back day 2. A nickle spot over night seems pretty major. If it is doing that just sitting, what does it do while running?

I had the grommet problem on occasion. When the engine warms up the grommet swells and stopps the the leak. I put black RTV between the wires. No more leak.

I had the problem on my first V (on my third now) and I too put some black RTV between/around the wires and that fixed it. My buddy has that bike now and with 20k miles since the "fix" it hasn't leaked. If it is on the left side near the jiffy stand that is most likely your leak. Oh and I have 62k on my Electra Glide with no leaks so I agree with pastorralph that is NOT a HD problem.

I replaced the alternator cover gasket on my bike about a month ago. That's the only leak I've had in 7 years. Might be worth checking into on your bike.

If you don't know, that's the large engine cover on the kickstand side of the bike. It bolts up to the crankcase (and has 14 bolts holding it on). Make sure it's dry along the seem, especially along the bottom.

also, check your oil filter and drain plug and make sure they're tight. I changed the oil in mine once and after a few days I was getting some spots on the driveway when I parked it. After heat cycling for a few days, the filter loosened up, and I got another 1/8 turn on the filter... no more leaks.
