Hey, I'm looking at a used Night Rod Special and I'm wondering what y'all think of the comfort for a day-long ride? I test rode one a year ago at the dealer, and I thought it was pretty comfy, with the good lower back support. But a test ride ain't a day in the saddle. My bike now has a pretty minimal padding and it feels find to my hard ***. But, I was wondering about the further reach, causing you to lean forward more. Or, has anyone put an aftermarket bar or risers on to allow a more relaxed riding position?
I replaced my Night Rod bars with some from a sportster. Many people do this and I find the more upright riding position to be very comfortable. I'm 6'2", 225lbs.
There's also something to be said for leaning into the wind. The day I bought my VRSCF (relatively low and forward bars), I rode 500 miles; most of it into a head wind. At the end of the day, my back and arms were just fine. YMMV.
I have a Night Rod, mid-cotrols, pull-back bars, highway pegs, with sundowner seats and Night Rod Touring seats. My wife prefers the 'downer. We've done several 500 mile days and one 600 mile day. No problems.
It gets even better, I'm putting on Arnott air shocks this week. (Compressor in the airbox, handle bar controls.)
Honestly, I think the VROD is the most comfortable bike Harley makes, and I've ridden the dressers. The riding position is perfect for my height & frame. If I were taking long trips I'd probably switch out the stock seat for a Sundowner.
Daaaayyyyyyaaaammmmm! Sundowner seats, custom sissy bar and Arnotts air suspension. That really is the way to ride a Vrod double. If you are going solo you don't need the tall sissy bar. The air ride changes everything. I thought the D was an awesome ride before. Adjusting the ride on the fly is great. I rode some decent back roads with my daughter on the back, 5'9" and carrying more than she should. The ride was excellent. I attacked a few twisties solo, incredible. The "cool factor" doesn't hurt either when you pull next to other bikes and slam it.

The stock Bar/Forward Control setup I think is the most uncomfortable (but cool and aggressive looking) stock setup Harley makes. There's no pull-back on the bars, and your feet are way our front. If you have long arms, it makes it better. That said it's not so uncomfortable that you can't ride all day long, but I'd also ride all day long on my KZ305.
The bars are super-easy to change out, and just about anything will have more pull-back. Sporster bars plug right in. Also the VRSCD bars have more pull-back.

I don't have one, but a friend of mine who has one is getting rid of it because he says that even after an hour he is so uncomfortable he can't enjoy the ride anymore. Everyone is different, but he says it is only good for him on really short rides.

I have an 04 "A" and I put a Sundowner seat on it so that my wife could ride comfortably on the back. I also installed a detachable windshield. I know that a lot of people think windshields are for sissies but the windshield takes the pressure off of the arms for longer rides. It takes less than a minute to remove it for when you meet your buddies at the bar later. I have done numerous half and three quarter day rides and I am sure that an all day ride would be no problem with this set-up.
