Default Hello

New here. Currently working on restoring my 1977 FLH that belonged to my father before he passed in 2016. Been a journey so far but hope to be done in the next few months!

Welcome to the HDFORUM.

I hope you continue to enjoy your ride here.

Only as a suggestion, by me as a USER, create a signature line similar to my one line on my bike information.

The year, model, and all the letters Harley assigned to the bike. It will appear at the bottom of your post.

Doing this will be helpful if you ask a question. All Harleys aren't the same with many changes and variations over the years.

Of course, you can add it to any thread with a question.

You can also add any other details you choose and a favorite picture to the signature lines.

If you like, you can also add another favorite picture for an Avatar you see at the top left of all your posts as a postage stamp.

Welcome! My story is similar. My father passed in October of last year and i inherited two Harleys from him. I just finished rebuilding the 2001 FXDP and the '72 Ironhead Sportster (not sure what the designation is) is in the shop. It was a bit too much of a project for me. Good luck!

Thank you for the welcome! I'm still learning how to navigate this site lol. As far as the bike goes, there's a long story with her but I'll try to hit the high points. My father got her when I was about 14 years old. He named her "Ruthie", after the mule on Gun smoke. He was a coal worker on the Ohio River loading barges my entire life. Anyway he and I had a spotty relationship over the years, some my fault some his as sons and fathers usually do. But riding and wrenching were always something that we could see eye to eye on. I grew up with dirt bikes and watching him and all his friends riding Harleys and Triumphs all over the place. He eventually developed cirrhosis of the liver when I was in my late 20s. But true to form he didn't really change anything. Working in the coal all week and wrenching and riding every weekend. Eventually around 2014 he was no longer able to ride or work and he basically sat in his recliner for the last 2 years. Ruthie was tucked away in the garage where she sat until he sold her to help pay for his funeral expenses. Though I had ridden his other Harley I never had ridden Ruthie, even though he had offered. Just thought it was the old man's bike and I didn't feel right about it. Anyway when he passed Ruthie went to his best friend. Later that gentleman passed away as well and I lost track of where she was. I had conceded that I would never see her again. Then about 2 years ago I got a call from a family friend who is a mail carrier who said one of the customers on her route stopped her and told her that he was the one with Ruthie. He was the Best friends nephew that inherited it. He then told her he was interested in selling it and wanted to know if any of the family wanted her back. So I was able to work out a deal with him and bring her home. At that point she had sat for basically 8 years. I had never worked on a classic Harley, I didn't really know much of any customized pieces or parts he had done either. But I was determined to figure it out lol. There's been a lot of surprises along the way but I had her running and road able after about 6 months. And was eventually able to take that first ride with him on her. Put about 1000 miles on her last year. She was always leaking around rocker boxes and got knows where underneath. So this April I started the teardown. Currently the frame is about to go to powder coat, I have new wiseco pistons ready to go into the freshly machined cylinders. Had new valve seats installed and machined. Currently trying to determine cam type and specs. Then will be trans teardown and inspection. I will be posting a thread of progress so far with pics. Thanks again everyone and look forward to learning a lot here.
