I saw a post where some guy was having trouble getting melted tennis shoe off his pipes. He let a buddy talk him into using oven cleaner on the pipes. Needless to say it went on other parts and now he’s got problems. I thought that I would share a trick that I thought up and use from time to time. Maybe it’s not new, but I’ve never heard anyone else recommend it. I warm the bike up and then I wad aluminum foil about the size of a golf ball and scrape the gunk off. The aluminum is harder than the melted plastic and softer than the chrome. It works like a charm for me. Try it in a hidden area first to be sure. Hope this is useful info. BB
What a friend of mine recomended was to get the bike good and hot - (real hot) and simply get a wad of rags and it should rub off....it worked first time.
The offending item in my case was cheap waterproof trousers, the nylon ones with the pvc backing.
What has always worked for me is use 0000 steel wool dipped in chrome polish, such as Mothers. The steel wool 0000 will not scratch the chrome, and the chrome polish will soften the plastic/rubber junk on the muffler. I have used this at least 3 times with never a scratch on the chrome and it always worked.
I have used turtle wax chrome polish and a rag with good sucess. Put it on thick and let it sit for a while then wipe it off and use your finger nail if needed. I see a lotof people recomend using steel wool, but keep in mind, the chrome layer is only the thickness of a human hair (.003"), using arasives over time will remove the chrome eventually.
OK / AVON sells a stainless steel steel wool ball called ROSE BUDS. Works great! four to a box,
I came across as a sugestion to some rust sots on a rifle/ little light oil = rose bud light rub and gone is the rust without harming the blueing.
on pipes it does help to heat pipes up alittle.
Good luck!
I used oven cleaner on mine. Worked great. I just sprayed it on a rag first really thick and then daubed it on the melted plastic. Let it sit for about an hour then go out and wipe with a wet rag. Came right off. I guess if you're careless with how you spray it on it could cause issues, but I had no problems.
