When checking the drive belt does someone need to be on the bike at the time? Does it really matter if the bike was just ridden? The book says to have someone on it and check when it’s cold. If so, is there a factor of some sort to use if no one is on it and its warm?
On most bikes there is a window in the lower deflector that will guide you on the belt deflection. It has graduations in it to help measure the anount.
The thing that covers the drive belt, mine is black plastic. In it there is a small window with tick marks around it. You put 10lbs of pressure on it (special tool you can buy) and see how much it deflects using the tick marks.
The tick marks are 1/8" apart, and the belt should deflect about 3/8" with 10 lbs of pressure.
You must have an older bike, as the 2005 models take a reading with the bike on the side stand. My 95 Roadking and my Wife's 97 Lowrider took the reading with the rider's weight on the bike.
If you have more questions, I can take some pictures of the belt, window, and tension tool to maybe help clear things up.
