Review of TomTom One GPS on a Harley
I won't go into length about the unit itself. There are plenty of other reviews on the web for the unit, but none of them with respect to motorcycle use.
I purchased the unit for $150 from www.buy.com (refurbished - although I couldn't tell the difference between it and a new one). I know it's a lower end GPS and not designed for motorcycle use, so my expectations were fair.
I purchased a RAM Mount from www.cyclegadgets.com specifically made for the TomTom One for $43.50 shipped. Their mounting systems are amazing, although overpriced. A U-Bolt base connects permanently to your handlebar. Then there's a removable bar with a ball+socket joint at the top that holds the GPS cradle. It's rock solid and I have no doubts that even big potholes won't jar the thing loose. I can position it to sit behind the windshield just above and to the left of my speedometer. I have to look down to view the unit as it's not in my direct vision while riding.
I hooked up a female cigarette adapter to the end of the battery tender pigtail for on-the-road charging, which is necessary since the unit only has a battery life of 2 hours.
I know the device is not weather-proof, so I have to remove the unit when in rain or when parked (which I'd do anyways because it would be a quick easy swipe to steal it).
The screen is large enough and bright enough even in direct sunlight.
With the volume at full, I can hear the directions clearly at low speeds, even with my full-face with visor down. At about 30 mph, I cannot hear the unit over wind and engine noise. So, if I was travelling at higher speeds, I need to make sure I kept an eye on the unit every now and then to see when my next turn was going to be (which is always clear and on the bottom-left corner of the unit).
The unit locked onto a signal within seconds of turning it on and the directions have been great (they even found a route to church that my wife and I have never taken and saved a few minutes).
For the price, I'm happy with my purchase. The greatest of the "cons" for the unit would be the low volume.
