I'm back from a 3 week, 16 state and 7000+ mile ride. My 06 EGC now has over 24k miles on it's odometer. I started from Bellingham, WA and attended the HD Forums Pacific Rally at Mammoth Lks, Ca. From there it was off to Houston, Texas. I've learned to love that state, especially the hill country between Abilene and San Antonio. On the return trip I spent some time in Rapid City, NOBODY returns a wave, and the Black Hills before heading back to WA.
I had three items fail during this trip and none of them came as a surprise because of the info from this Forum.
The first thing to go was my adjustable backrest. Both pivot pins had lost their 'keepers' and the spring loaded one was sliding it's way out. I lucked out as my pal in Houston had both of the needed bolts and nuts in his 'junk box'. I only had to buy some lock-tite to fix things right. By the way, the dealer's parts guys didn't have a clue as to what clips were needed to fix it per factory.
The second failure happened during Houston's evening rush hour. The front connection of the gear shift link fell off at a stop. Glad I had it in 1st so I could get to a spot to put on the cable tie and rubber band that got me to my destination. The entire assy was replaced the next day by a dealer under warranty.
The last item to go was the front motor mount. This is an item I've added to my pre-ride inspection as it wasn't discovered until I stopped in Olathe, KS for an oil change. It may even have been missed then but the mechanic couldn't get his wrench on the oil filter because it was resting on the voltage regulator. Another warranty repair.
Now that I'm back home a complete going over will be done. From the looks of our weather, I made it back just before the snow hit the passes between east and western Washington, I'll have plenty of time to do a good job.
The few pics that were taken are posted on my website.
Sounds like a great trip, other thanthe items you mentioned...but you got them handledok. It was a pleasure meeting you at the Pacific Rally and hope to see you again. Best regards.
Man, that's the kind of trip I dream of taking. Lots of time and no schedule. Even with the problems I bet it will take at least 6 months before you're all stressed out again.
