Default Things That Have Left You Stranded On The Road With Your EVO

- Hi.

- am thinking of taking a long road trip with my '96 Heritage
Softail (carburettored EVO 1340).

- but the thought of being left stranded is holding me back
(the bike has been flawlessly reliable , but its an 11 year old
bike .... ).

- so , to help me make a list of stuff that I may need to
bring along (as parts) , could you guys help by posting the
sort of stuff that has left you stranded by the roadside with
your EVO1340 and what was it that was 'broken'.

- eg , I have a particular fear of ignition systems (ie , all
the 'invisible' stuff).

- thanks !!

.

You don't state the miles on your ride.

Maintanance b4 leaving.

Cell phone.

Small pump and tire plugs.

For the most part a few tools and have fun.

Evo never stranded me....well there was that one time after too many cold ones that I hit the switch by mistake and then there was that other time after too many beers that I forgot about the petcock being in the off position. I wouldn't call it stranded though, just a DUH moment.
Two solutions - Got a twin cam and don't drink nearly as much Sure would have been cheaper if I slowed the drinking first.

On a serious note - I used to take all kinds of crap with me just in case. The only thing I ever used beside the road was a new set of plugs.

- hi 89.

- its got about 30,000 miles on the clock. I just
did a complete fluid change (engine, primary, tranny and
brake).

cheers.
.

edit : eg , what I mean is whether I should be
collecting stuff like the coils/ignition module/crank
position sensor ..... and have parts like these (or
others) failed on you on the road before.

thanks !!!

The only time it ever left me sitting is when I had a coil crap out on me.

In 2003 my wife and I shipped my 13 year-old Evo to Chicago from the UK and we travelled 3,500 miles on it in 3 1/2 weeks, taking in the Centenary celebrations at Milwaukee, visited Niagara Falls and had a great time. It used 3 quarts of oil, I flooded it once when starting it and we washed it once. Sum total of trip!

If you have a really major trip planned, get the bike serviced, make sure everything is in tip-top condition and enjoy the ride!

I've never had an EVO leave me stranded.....nothing ever related to the engine though. The Twin Cam on the other hand did leave me stranded...and it was related to the engine (damn cam bearings).

I've had two belts break on me in the last 20 years....this will leave you stranded. One of those times were only a partial stranded.

Keep your bike in tip top shape and keep an eye on things. For instance, you wouldn't want to start out on a long trip on a nearly bald tire.

Pistole,

Finished up a 4300 trip on my '97 Heritage EVO in September. Experienced no problems whatsoever. I carry enough tools to make simple roadside repairs, cell phone and a credit card.

The only time the bike has let me down is with a rear tire flat. Not a repair I wanted to tacklewith spoke wheels and tube tires on the side of the road. Fix a flat and a hand pump might help you to get further down to road to find a repair shop.

Change your fluids and make sure the bike is running well before you leave and you shouldn't have any problems. I would not hesitate to take a 5000+ mile trip on my EVO.

GRBrown: Out of curiosity, how much did it cost to have the bike shipped, and what was the process? That sounds like a great adventure. You must've turned heads with your Brit license plates on it...
