2008 ULTRA IDS BEARING FAILURE & RANT
5360 miles & I got this marble/klunk sound. It started as a very faint sound & progressively got worse.I took it to the 1st dealer & they thought it was in the primary,so did I.They said it was the chain slapping & I could ride it safely. They said were not taking any bikes for service till after the New Year.So off I rode to the 2nd dealer. They took me right in & called me a hour later with the news.NOT SAFE TO RIDE!Can't get the parts for 7 to 10 days.I told them I will be right over.I checked the mileage. They had rode the bike a total of 9 miles. The noise was worse, the IDS bearing failed. This dealer wanted me to sign a paper that had a big red box:NOT SAFE TO RIDE.I told them:You can't strong arm me into signing.I am not signing anything.I am not leaving my bike here for 7-10 days either. The mananger came out & was nice enough.I ask why couldn't he call & get the part from another dealer?Tipical BS obtained.I left, with my bike.Called a 3rd dealer 10 miles away. They have the part. They will have the bike done tomorrow.I live in Phoenix & we have dealers on every corner.I think they all hate each other.Seems a **** poor way to operate a buisness.I have been riding on 2 wheels since 1962.Bought my first new vehicle in 1968 when I was 18,it was a motorcycle.Bought my first new Harley in 1980 & many in between. The Harley dealers & MOCO have changed over the years.I would like to remain a loyal HD rider/owner.But,This might be my last new one kids.My 1999 FLHR & 2007 FLHX were money pits & pingers. This 08 is the best running stocker I've owned to date, stock except for V&H FuelPak/True Duals,Supertrapp internal discs,SE A/C/Stage 1download.I hope the UDS bearing is just a fluke.I would like to keep this one.My lady says:Owning a Harley isn't for the faint of heart.Hell,I am just tired of their scare tacticts & dumping a bunch of money, time, upgrades in a bike to get it to run right.Regards,Tom ps:mabe I'll lay off the coffee tomorrow!
A certain percentage of mechanical parts fail due to engineering, quality, whatever. But to go through the "it'll take 7-10 days to fix" when there is a part 10 miles down the road is unacceptable. If it is just the bearing that failed, you could also get it from any bearing distributor, might pay a bit more but it is available.
Hope you are up and riding soon.

I would bet that HD used the cheapest bearing available for the job. I would alsobet it is water damaged and the ***** and races are rusted as well if you have that noise. By looking at thebearing, it will tell you what made it fail. Could be rust, cage failure, or just not up to the task for long term operation.Could also be incorrect amount of press fit during install. That will kill a bearing real fast. Based on that, you can determine whether to stop spraying water on it or you should replace it with a higher quality bearing.

I know exactly what your saying ! Have had similar experiences when I lived in Mesa. Have bought 3 different bikes from 3 different dealers in the valley and NONE will work with each other . Back in July when I was looking for my Standard there were 7 FLH Standards at various valley dealers { my dealer had none at the time } and none would do a dealer trade, so my dealer ended up getting my { black bike , no alarm ,and mag wheels not spoke }, through a trade with Grand Canyon H/D in Flagstaff. Just took me couple days longer ,but it did work out ok.

What i dont understand is if a dealer told you a bike was unsafe to ride, why would you argue, second if you disagreed why wouldnt you give them a simple signature stating that if you rode off and killed yourself they couldnt be sued, seems fairly reasonable to me

Here is the deal. They could not fix the failed bearing so they wanted to hold me hostage for a week to 10days(MOCO/parts closed for the holidays). The tech did not have to ride the bike for 9 miles to hear the noise/problem.Hell,when I left the bike at the dealer the radio was off. When I turned the key on the radio came blasting on,with rap.So I figured I could ride it the same distance to a dealer that had the parts in stock with the rap on & would not be able to hear the noise.IT WORKED!Regards,Tom
