Did 10,000 mi service on 07 rkc today. Let me start by saying I have 30+ yrs experience as mechanic and pride myself in being very meticulous. After making sure that all points were covered, all fluids full, clutch adjusted, bolts checked, etc. etc., I proceeded to remove the bike from the stand that I built. I have had the bike on this stand many times with no problems, very simple and sturdy. Well for some reason the bike did not want to come off. STOP. Yeah, thats what I should have done. Admittedly my mind was on other issues today, and I usually try to give full attention to the job at hand, even one as simple as anoil change. Now here's my advice: TAKE THE D*^%&$N DRAIN PAN WITH 6 QTS USED SYNTHETIC OIL OUT FOM UNDER THE BIKE. Makes a helluva mess on untreated new shop floor and front wheel assy of bike. Note for next time...remove head and drain pan. At least I can laugh at myself. Ya'll join in.
Don't feel bad. I changed my oil today and was interrupted by a friendly visit from one of my neighbors. I went back out to finish the job an hour or two later and filled it up with fresh Mobil V-Twin. When I finished congratulating myself on a job well done, I realized that I had not changed the filter.
In the middle ofmy last oil change a friend pulled up the driveway and into the garage on his bike. Just came by to chat. First I forgot to prefill the oil filter, not too big a deal since I realized it as soon as I tightened it. Got that corrected and then proceeded refill the tranny, without reinstalling the drain plug.
Note to self: Keep garage door closed and don't answer the phone when servicing the bike. [:-]
