Some people have successfully loosened the pipes and lifted them up. I found it easier just to drop the exhaust totally to gain access. It's a PITA with the stock pipes because of the crossover, with duals it is nothing to loosen the right side and lift it up or even remove the whole side.

Use a 1/4" allen wrench and cut the short end as short as possible to leave just enough to seat in the allen head completely and you can remove the clutch/trans cover without removing anything. The bolts do not have to be removed from the cover so that the cover can be lifted out and over the pipes with the bolts still in the cover holes. Once you break the bolts loose with the short allen, many times you can spin them out with your fingers then.
