FXDI Ignition Switch Idea (Switch Mount Pics 02/09)
Here's my plan. Not all the details have been worked out yet. DougsDyna has been a huge help with overcoming electrical issues. I want to do away with the gas gauge and mount a switch in that hole in the Super Glide console. This will require me to rely on the trip odometer and low fuel light to keep me from walking, which I am OK with.
The switch itself is smaller than the diameter of the fuel gauge hole. I am overcoming this with the use of thechrome bezel trim available from Harley. The inside diameter of the trim piece is smaller than the switch. Its either trim the chrome bezel or trim the switch. I chose to trim the switch.I disassembled the switch down to the plastic housing. I used a dremel tool and trimmed a collar around the top edge so the chrome bezel would fit over that collar. Below is a picture of the switch reassembled with the chrome bezel in place.
Next I will have to work out how to mount the switch. There is a plastic bracket under the console which helps secure the fuel gauge. I have ordered another one of these from Harley that I can do some cutting on. I intend to use this bracket and some sheet type metal for the mounting.
Last, and this is where Doug came to the rescue, is making the low fuel light work. Turns out the low fuel light gets it signal from the fuel gauge. If there is no fuel gauge in place, the low fuel light won't work properly. Doug did some checking and figured this out for me. To getaround this, he suggested disassembling the fuel gauge to just leave the circuitry and wiring hooked up. So that is the plan. I have a take-off gauge on the way so I don't have to screw up my original gauge.
Anyway, thats whats in the works. If all goes well and this thing works out, the console will be finished off with a chrome gas cap and trim. Anyone got any ideas to help with this, I am more than open to them.

Nevermind! I was thinking that your tank was like the one on my fxdl, where the fuel guage is recessed into the tank. Sorry bout that.
the switch to the console. Right??
How about a picture of the underside,
and, what machine is the switch from??

I will have the take-off gauges by the end of the week and will be pulling the console off again. I will get some pictures up then. And I definitely look forward to your ideas.
The switch is the universal flip-up typewith 3 flat(spade) terminals. As far as I can tell, the mounting is all thats left to figure out. Doug has done the rest of the work for me.
I'm trying to make this as much of a pain in the *** as possible and do it with no exposed hardware.

I think thats what youre trying to do, but I wonder if theres enough clearance between the switch and the sender hardware?
Mounting the switch will be easy if you can use the plastic goodie that surrounds the gauge now. If you cant, then theres the option of welding the screws to the console and grinding the heads off. You'll have to fill the four holes the plastic goodie screws into anyway, so it sounds like it might work.
I'm a little hesitant about loosing the gauge altogether. I found myself in a predicament last fall that would have had me pushing and not riding if all I had was an idiot light.

There do not appear to be any clearance issues under the console. There is a pretty big recess (and deep)where the fuel gauge now sits. This will give me plenty of room to bury the circuitry of a gauge for the working of the low fuel light, and still have extra clearance for the switch.
I don't foresee the mounting of the switch being too big of a deal. I think a flat aluminum piece used in conjunction with the fuel gauge mounting bracket will work well.
I like the idea of moving the gauge anyway.
I went the route of punching the extra hole in the console, and even though it looks alright and functional, I'm not completely happy with it.
Youre idea sounds a lot better than my lame brained hatchet job.
