Default Removing sideplates FXDWG

Hey guys I have a question. I just bought a Corbin seat with passenger backrest so I want to ditch the rigid mount sideplates and sissybar on my WG so I can switch to a solo seat and no sissybar when the wife isn't riding with me. Well I took the sideplate of one side and went to put it back together before removing the other side and it looks like I should have some kind of spacer between the fender and the rail. There is about an 1/8" gap where the sideplate was that I can't draw closed. I'm not sure if there should be a spacer there the whole length like the sideplate but without the upright or if I should just fit a couple washers between there. I bought the bike used so I'm not sure if the sissybar was stock on an 01 WG or if the owner before me added it. That's why I was thinking maybe there was a plate there that he removed to add the sideplate?
Any help would be appreciated.

jv225, all wideglides come stock with sissy bars so the sideplates were always there. I had my sideplates off while i was changing my rear wheel setup and it seemed to me that the fender pushed out to meet the struts. I also pulled on the fender to get as much room for a 150 tire as possible.

i belive when you put a rigid mount sissybar side plates in it comes w/longer bolts so when you take off the side plate you need the original shorter ones. when i had my honda shadow and i put the sissy bar on thats how it was done. i'm not sure if its the same w/harley. i'm just glad i got a detachable one on my bob.

Hey. I have an 05 WG with a Corbin Classic Solo. What I did was I bought flat black rubber washers at the hardware store, probably about 2" around, I think the kind used for car body fender spacers. In any event I used these as spacers for the side rails to the fender then took a new razor blade any gently scribed along the rails after tightening the bolts. You cannot notice the black rubber spacers that are there.

I think I doubled up to get the proper space.

I took the sideplates off my '03 and didn't use any spacers. I never noticed the gap or even thought about it, but I just went out in the garage and looked...it's there. There's about a 1/8" gap between the chrome strut cover and fender on top, it's tight to the fender on the bottom. It won't hurt anything unless it bothers you.

Yep..I had to buy one for my 06. It's actually kinda funny, because if you look at some of the early 06 press shots, they show the Wide glide with a sissy bar. Must have been a last minute decision to do away with them for this year. Bast*rds Anyway...if you're looking, you might want to get the detachable sideplates. They come off real easy if you wanna fly without the sissy bar once in a while
Just a thought.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. Originally I was going to get detatchable sideplates but eventually I want to put quick release bags on and for some reason they won't work with detatchable sideplates on a WG. I've been looking for a good deal on a corbin dual tour for my wife since she gets uncomfortable on the current seat in less than an hour. I finally just got one on ebay that came with the backrest for driver or passenger for way less than half the cost of just the seat directly from corbin. So I thought I'd go this route.
Thanks again guys I'll get it back together after work today.

Excellent choice on the Dual Tour with backrest, jv. Much better than the sideplate mounted sissy bar.
