Default Fairing Removal How To General Section?

With every one talking about removing the front fairing on the SG and I think that it might be the same for the EG's UG's too? Can we get a nice simple easy "How To" put into the General How To Section?

I know you guys always say get the Service Manual, and I have one on order. I like the detailed versions of how people on here have done it for real and I was wondering if some one could right/type up a nice how to for it and get it into the "General Do It Your-Self Section."

I would be happy to include something of this nature in the DIY area if someone that has done it can write up a detailed post and notify me with a link or PM it to me so I can copy it to the DIY area. If you can get some pics too, it would be a great help also.

Think it a great idea!

Thanks

If you guys want to , you can start it here and when someone see's an addition or correction, copy and paste the entire reply into your own reply with the correction/addition and when it's finally done , i'll move it to the DIY area for future reference.

Let's get it going

I just went out to take some pictures to illustrate for you
how to remove the outer fairing and of course the batteries
in my camera are dead.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow if you need them.

It's a really easy job.Of course start by covering your front
fender with a towel or blanket of some type just in case
you happen to drop something. You don't want the front
fender dinged or scratched.

Remove the 3 torx screws at the top of the outer fairing
holding the windscreen in place. Now remove the windscreen.

Go around to the inner fairing and remove the 2 torx screws just below
the fairing mounted mirrors. Now you will have to look below the inner fairing
cap and locate the 2 torx screws holding the bottom of the outer to the inner.
These are located up in between the forks below the inner fairing cap.
Remove those and you're there.Slide the outer away from the inner, unplug
the headlight and remove it,and slide the outer fairing off.

I personally think it's a good idea to have somebody hold the
outer while your remove the final 2 torx screws.
If you don't the outer may not go anywhere but then again it might.

Also if I remember correctly all the torx screws are T-27.

One sure way to avoid having the outer fairing fall off is to reinstall the center windshield screw after removing the windshield. Then remove all of the remaining outer fairing screws, leaving the center windshield screw for last. This way you are standing right in front of the outer fairing when removing the final screw. Makes it much easier to safely handle the fairing this way.

one HINT... after removing the three screws and taking out the windshield ... Put the Center screw back in about half way..... this will hold the fairing and allow you to remove all the rest, then when done... stand in front - with one hand, hold the fairing at the light and the other remove the center screw... now do a little tilting and the fairing will move forward - reach in and unplug the headlight.... Done.... do the same when installing,,,,,, put the center screw in part way to hold the weight... install the rest of the screws but do not tighten until all are in - fairing may need to be move back and forth to line up holes.... then tighten from the bottom up - this has worked for me and I have had mine off many times... I can do it with my eyes closed now...

Now go out and buy that service manual

A towel or other padding between the passing lamps and the fairing is also a good idea. That way you don't ding the fairing on one of the lamps as you are taking it off.

Thanks!
