Kuryakyn Forward controls
I installed a set of the Kuryakyn forward controls last night on my 06 35th. Took a bit longer then expected even knowing/researching all the issues installing this kit.
The brake side of the install literally took 20 minutes to do.
The shift side took far longer. As I've previously read, the splines of the factory shift lever in no way align up to the Kuryakyn shift lever extention. The only way to get the factory shifter on there is to spread the splines apart as far as you can, take the entire forward control off the bike and bang it on there. I 'aint talking about love taps with a rubber mallet either; 2 blocks of wood and full on power swings. You better be sure that the foot shift is in the correct location before you bang it on there because you only have a limited amount of adjustment in the linkage to raise and lower the shifter. Lucky, I eyeballed it pretty good. Also, the wedge for the mid control shaft came with the wrong sized attaching nut and bolt (coarse threads, need fine threads).
Another thing I noticed was that standard front footpegs position are too far inboard so your legs wrap around the engine and air cleaner. I was lucky to have a new set of Kuryakyn Stirrups in my parts bin which puts the pegs out 1 to 1.5" and put the foot pegs in the proper position (exactly on the same 'plane' as the mid controls' were located). I just can't see running this kit without using either longer/extended pegs or the Stirrups. So my brand new custom peg's was out, a set of Kuryakyn Dually's and Stirrups were in. If i didn't have this stuff in the garage, I'd be really pissed.
So, it is not exactly a bolt-in kit but it feels and functions very well. Shifting and braking are excellent with no play. If anybody is thinking about installing this kit, consider the issues and keep in mind that the '05 HD kit (when not removing the primary) is probably an easier install up there with changing your oil.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had. I've bought a lot of stuff from Kuryakyn and it has all fit as advertised, instructions are real clear. I checked Kuryakyn's website and the forwards are listed to fit 1990-2006, no mention of a different spline pattern on the '06 models.
Just keep an eye on the shifter after using it for a while, you don't want to strip the shifter splines. Just curious, have you called Kuryakyn to ask them about your problem?

The issue with the splines is documented by others who have installed the same kit on newer bikes and Kuryakyn is aware of the issue. No surprises on my part except for the width issue. The stock shift lever is now a press fit with plenty of spline 'grab' and secured with a bolt and nut. On another note, I bet the $79 Kuryakyn shift lever bolts up just fine .
My solution 'aint going anywhere and would have to be cut off if I ever change the lever! I think the spline's changed in the mid to late 90's from a course to fine pattern so it might be worth buying an older pattern lever cheap to make this install a 45 minute job.
I have to sit on and check the factory wideglide forward control position but I bet it's as wide as the Kuryakyn forwards WITH the wide stirrup attached. Like I mentioned before, the Kuryakyn kit is a bit narrow without the stirrups; my right knee wrap around the air cleaner and I'm running the 8" round cover (not the football cover) which would be worse. With the with of the stirrup in place though, the peg position is perfect. A good thing if you already have Kuryakyn stirrups, bad if you have to dump an extra $79 into this project.
