Default Chrome Lower Sliders

I've got a 2006 FLST and I'm thinking about installing chrome lower sliders on it. I'm going to the dealer to pick up a manual before I start the project but I was wondering how many have already done this and did you learn any tricks you might want to pass along. Thanks

I am about to do the same and there are 5 things I have learned so far:

1. 1st one you are taking care of (buying a manual)

2. Study this link

3. You need a long 6mm allen wrench socket ... I got mine coming from Ebay.

4. Be patient and it's not as hard as it seems ... so they say

5. Do the cow bells at the same time

I am just waiting for the snow to fall to tear apart the bike (lord help me .. never done this before). Not only am I doing the lower forks, also the nacelle, Wild 1 bars, all new lines, chrome master cylinder kit, new grips, heck ... might as well say the entire front end.

I will try posting picks along my journey.

You do need an extra long 6mm allen socket. I couldn't find one anywhere, so I made one. Get a standard allen key, and a 6mm socket. Cut off one end of the allen key, and glue it into the socket.

As turns out, my new '06 Dyna has a much bigger bolt than 6mm. So I had to make a new one for this bike.

If you try to torque it with a big wrench, you'll most likely round it out. Use an impact wrench and it will come right out.

This is the step I'm stuck on right now, and an impact wrench is where i'm going next.

Thanks for everyones input. I purchased a manual over the weekend from the stealer and it doesn't look like it's going to be to as hard as I was thinking. I am going to wait a couple more weeks before I tear into it I want to take advantage of any nice days as I can.

Air impact wrench and the 6mm bolt came right out. The other one was already rounded, so I had to drill it out.

Don't take the top caps off the forks, which will release the springs, under tension. They don't need to come out to replace the fork sliders......DOH!

Tin Gizel ----- Thanks for the info and I beleive you 100% but you've got me wondering if I don't remove the top caps off how the heck am I gonna fill the forks with oil? Are you just filling each lower slider with the proper amount and than installing them back together? Thanks for the heads up

It's kind of hard to explain......

There is the top cap which takes a 1-3/8" socket to remove, and this let's you remove the fork from the triple trees. This one is fine to take off, and you can fill the forks through this one. It's the part that this cap screws into that you don't want to remove. I have pictures from when i made my mistake.....as soon as I find the cord to download them to my computer, I will upload them here and show you exactly what not to remove.

Here's the picture of the upper fork slider, spring retaining cap (as i will call it), and the top cap. The part you don't want to remove is the middle part, the spring retaining cap. It's not so much that it's hard to reinstall, more that it'll scare the heck outta you when it shoots across the garage with the spring and is completely unnecessary to replace the lower sliders.
