I finally converted my '98 ultra from MM EFI to S&S Super E. Having a tough go at getting it timed. I know that for the ignition that I am using (Ultima 53-644) I need to get to top dead center on the compression stroke of the front cylinder. I am finding next to impossible to get to TDC by myself. Anyone have any tips on how to do this alone, or should I just buy another case of beer and call in some help to look in the timing hole while I spin the rear wheel?

I use a drinking straw in the spark plug hole as a visual guide. Verify the accuracy by the mark in the timing plug hole.

Thanks. I tried that and couldn't see the zip tie while laying on the floor turning the rear wheel, plus I cant tell if it is the compression stroke that way. Guess I'll buy the beer!!!!

Use the straw. Rotate the engine until you find the top of the front piston stroke.

Look in the timing inspection hole.

See the timing mark? You found it.

Don't see the timing mark? Rotate the engine so that the front piston goes down and then back up to the top of its stroke.

Look in the timing inspection hole again. You should see the mark this time.

If not, buy beer.

I think the mark will show on both the compression and exhaust stroke. I'll buy the beer, seems easier that crawling back and forth on the floor.

Pull your pushrod tubes up, watch the straw and when it is at the top both lifters should be down. Look in the hole. You are TDC compression.

Thanks for the info. I understand totally, it's just hard to see the pushrods, straw, and the timing hole while I am turning the back wheel. I' got a buddy to help my tomorrow night, he can look in the hole, while I turn the wheel. No biggie.

SUCCESS! Had a friend come over last night and had it timed in less than 10 minutes. Now just gotta tune the S&S and will be all good to go.
