in my shop we do lots of unit engines for other shops and not having the chassis -we set the timing static using a battery - coil , plugs and plug wires,
turn the engine over with the rear intake pushrod cover open so you can see the intake pushrod - rotate the engine till the line or dots < your engine - are coming to the center of the timing hole and at the same time the rear cylinder intake pushrod is moving up ( opening the intake valve ) eyes in the hole finger on the R intake pushrod
at the center of the hole will be the front cylinder advance spot - then rotate the center trigger wheel to the advance spot all the way, and just as it stops you should see the plugs spark - tighten the - point / dyna trigger - plate screws and your done no need to get soaked with oil
if you have a total electronic controlled module the turn clockwise till the light goes out your done
what your doing is holding it in the total advances location - and rotating the plate to it so the thing trips and fires the plugs just at that exact spot - not before and not after
don't over think it - its a simple adjustment at the spot the engine is at total advance and you lock it down - your done its that simple
