Default Question for the painters

If an existing paint job is in good condition (it's a 2011), can you lightly sand the clear coat and spray metal flake over top? I don't want a new $3000 paint job, just want something a little different.

Thanks,
Teagan

Im no painter but I have a friend who is and he did a nice job on my 02 Super Glide's ghost flames. He wet sanded the clear, sprayed on the ghost flames then clear coated over that. Looked good and held up for 3 years until I traded it in. I assume it held up for a lot longer after the trade

I would imagine that a painter would be able to just sand down the clear and shoot over it if you want to keep the existing color. Find a good painter in your area and ask, that's the best thing you can do. After working in a body shop for a while, there's no replacement for someone who really knows how to lay down paint.

When you find a good painter, they should be able to tell you exactly what they want to do to make it right. Guys that know what they're doing don't want to put their name on something that looks bad.

If you're using the same type paint, it'll be OK.

James, welcome to the forum from central Texas.

If Teagan decided to do the flake it has probably been done already since he asked about it 5 years ago. He hasn't been active on the forum for 2 years. Still, that's a good information.

Oh and to answer the OP's question, metal flake in clear is not something I would do due to the flake size and wanting it all to be under the clear.... what you CAN do is put pearl in the clear for a similar effect.... the pearl is so much smaller that it is smothered in the clear

If you really want metal flake you can do it in an intercoat

If the underlying paint/clear is in good condition, wash, degrease, sand with 1000 wet and prep for top coat
