FXST SOFTAIL nightrain 2005,wheels upgrade, wider tires questions
hello to all. i am new to hd. just bought my 1st harley ! it is a 2005 fxst night train. i bought it from harley finance, it is a repo...the previous owner took off a few items before the repo. so i am buying all i need.
i am at the point that i want to upgrade the wheels. i bought a jesse james 4.75 "forty" front fender. the wheels on the bike are 21 in front and 16 in rear with a 150 tire.
i want o put a larger rear tire/wheel.
i am definitely wanting a 18 inch wheel in the back with a low profile tire, if possible a 160 tire. i dont want to modify the rear.
can anyone tell me if this is doable...? what size rim width can i go maximum and what size tires...
and for the front, since i have the fender that is 4.75, i want to put a 21 inch wheel a little wider than the original. how wide and what tire size can i pulll in the front ?
i appreciate all the help . thanks.

Steve, Congrats on the new ride.
The front is easy, just get a 21x3.25 wheel and run a 120 up there. Many guys have done it and it looks really good. The rear isnt quite as easy. From what I have read, an 18 has clearance issues with the caliper. I dont really understand how or why, but thats what I've seen. The EASIEST thing to do is to run a 17" wheel for a Deuce back there with a 160 (or even a 170, which will be TIGHT). I have this setup on my bike now. To do this, I had to change out my rear spacers to center the rear wheel. If you take notice your wheel is shifted to the left about 1/4"-3/8" from the factory. To do this, you need I believe a 2" spacer (1/8" longer than your stock spacer) for the left side and to machine off 1/8" from the caliper where it mounts to the swing arm. I cheated and just used a 4" grinder and a little die grinder to take that 1/8" off since the surface isnt visible anyway. Its really not that tough of a modification.
Here are some pics of mike bike with a Deuce wheel with the fins machined off, then chrome plated:

Duece wheel on a 99 fxstc
[quo Man....your lucky !! to get a Duece wheel with a 160 tire on my 99 i had to do all kinda -hit !!!! new 1" belt and pulley Duece caliper had to machine 1/4" off of pulley, had to weld longer tab on swingarm for caliper, rewire rear lights into fender strut, grind lip off of bottom of fender, different spacers, bolts inside fender!!! a ton of work...and money to say the least, but....the bike looks and rides incredible so it was worth it!
