Hi, I cant find a definitive answer yet. Does anyone know whats all involved in putting on a 17" duece wheel on my 99 fxstc that has a 16 x 3 inch on it now. will my axle work, pulley, rotor, caliper ? ?? any help greatly appreciated my girl is buying me a new chrome wheel for Christmas and i would love to mount the Duece wheel if it doesnt cost me a million to do it ! Thanks, Frank
It should be possible, if these guys can put them on Dyna's it surely can be stuffed into your swing arm. GeorgeJ has one on his 2001 FXD, he may be able to give you some info. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/5932209-post29.html
The first thing you need to do is to see how much room you have inside your rear fender from the strut bolt to strut bolt Your going to need 7" in order to put a 160/70/17 inch tire in there. If your running a 150/80/16 now with an 1 1/8" belt it should fit with all your stock parts.Hope this helps.
You will need to change out your hardware on the inside of your rear fender. The 99-02 bikes had bulkier hardware. I know in last years accessories book there was still the wide tire kit for your bike which included a narrow pulley and belt along with new fender hardware. This allowed you to go to a 150 rear tire. I am not sure that the Harley wide tire kit actually centers the rear wheel. In order to run a Deuce rear wheel with a 160 tire, you must center the rear wheel on the fender. If you take notice, yours probably is off to the left by about 3/8".
On my 04 I did the Deuce rear wheel swap. On my bike it only required a new spacer for the left side of the wheel (a Deuce oe spacer will work), then you have to grind 1/8" off of your brake caliper. Some people have removed the caliper and had it machined down. I on the other hand, just used a 4" electric grinder and small pneumatic die grinder to remove that 1/8". Its not visible, so it doesnt have to be perfect. On my 04 (which I believe has the identical fender to your 99), the 160 clears with room to spare. I actually even plan on going to a 170 next time around.
I have the Deuce style rear wheel on my '06. One thing to remember, this wheel was made for the Dyna's and has a 1" axle compared to the 3/4" axle of the earlier Dyna's and Deuce bikes. No spacers changes needed. But I agree, it should be very doable on your bike! Might need a spacer adjustment but the two main things I would worry about would be all the "stuff" under the fender (can be cleaned up as to not hit the new larger tire) and the drive belt proximity to the rear side wall (which can also be taken care of with a little work).
